Yogscast Games and Save Sloth Studios are about to unleash utter medieval madness onto the PC battlefield. Mark your calendars: The Royal Writ, a delightfully chaotic lane-based deckbuilder, officially launches on Steam this August 7, 2025.
Set in the whimsical but war-torn land of Aranfold, The Royal Writ kicks off with a royal decree gone awry. King Mikolt the Second—beloved, feared, and mostly ignored—has had enough of the kingdom’s Bandit Leader. After his attempt at diplomacy (a strongly-worded letter) falls flat, he turns to a motley militia of ants, bats, frogs, bugs, and barely qualified beasts to restore law and order the old-fashioned way: with relentless, turn-based carnage.
A Deckbuilder Where Death is Inevitable—and Hilarious
Combining storybook visuals with irreverent humor and strategic depth, The Royal Writ offers players a unique roguelike experience where permadeath isn’t just a feature—it’s the point. Battles take place on dynamic grids of one to three lanes, where players deploy units and unleash damage through clever combinations of power and multiplier effects. The goal? Obliterate your enemies before they reach your base.
But don’t get too attached. Soldiers—no matter how quirky or clutch—can and will die. And then you’ll toss more into the meat grinder five minutes later.
“The Royal Writ rips up the rulebook and offers a unique lane-based deckbuilder where sentiment and loyalty go out the window in the pursuit of victory,” says Simon Byron, Managing Director of Yogscast Games. “We’re excited to see our community build weird armies, watch them die, mourn them briefly, then throw their replacements into battle five minutes later.”
From Tax-Biting Bats to Drunken Frogs
The true charm of The Royal Writ lies in its riotous roster of troops. Each card is packed with personality—like The Tax Collector, a vampire bat who drains both HP and gold, or Gereb, a hard-drinking frog that grows more powerful the closer he is to death. Then there are synergy-based strategies, like ants that become miniature powerhouses when grouped together.
Events between battles add further spice—whether it’s horse racing, visiting a dentist, or navigating deadly anthills and mushroom fields. Deck limits and resource scarcity force players to make tough calls, often sacrificing their most beloved units for the greater good (or a shiny new relic).
Hardship and Challenge modes offer added replayability for deckbuilding diehards. With each run offering new combinations and chaotic outcomes, The Royal Writ practically dares you to return, rebuild, and conquer all over again.
Prepare for Glory on August 7
Whether you’re a strategy junkie or just here for the frog-fueled carnage, The Royal Writ is poised to be one of the most uniquely twisted deckbuilders of the year. Wishlist it now on Steam and prepare to command the kingdom’s weirdest army yet.
