The stars are calling, and strategy is your only weapon. Indie studio k-Critical has officially launched Command Deck, a sci-fi roguelike deckbuilder, into Steam Early Access today. Blending deep tactical gameplay with the atmosphere of classic 1970s science fiction, Command Deck invites players to take command of the starship Peregrine and face the dangers of the Outer Reaches.
Deckbuilding Among the Stars
In Command Deck, every decision matters. Players control their ship entirely through a deck of cards—raising shields, firing missiles, unleashing devastating lasers, and outmaneuvering alien foes. The Outer Reaches are unforgiving, and survival depends on building a deck that balances both defense and offense while adapting to unpredictable challenges.
Enemies don’t just follow scripted patterns; they fight with their own decks of cards, making every encounter feel like a duel of wits. By disrupting enemy strategies or stealing their abilities, players can turn the tide in thrilling tactical battles.
Inspired by Classic Sci-Fi
Lead designer Erik Johnson explained the game’s unique visual style:
“We wanted to capture the feeling of 1970s sci-fi novel covers. Growing up, my shelves were filled with those books, and the art of John Berkey, Boris Vallejo, and Vincent Di Fate was especially influential.”
This retro-futuristic inspiration shines through in Command Deck’s striking visuals and worldbuilding, creating a game that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
