Shmup fans, get ready to test your reflexes. Psyvariar 3, the long-awaited sequel to SUCCESS’ legendary shoot ’em up franchise, will launch on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam) in early 2026. Developed by Banana Bytes (creators of Sophstar) in collaboration with Red Art Studios, the game continues the series’ legacy while celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
A New Era of Bullet Hell Begins
First hitting Japanese arcades back in 2000, the Psyvariar series quickly became a cult favorite thanks to its distinctive “buzz” mechanic, rewarding daring players for grazing bullets to boost their score and shields. Now, with Psyvariar 3, the formula is being refined for a new generation, featuring seven unique pilots (including a special guest appearance from Cotton, the iconic witch from the Cotton series), multiple game modes, and updated mechanics designed for both veterans and newcomers.
The game expands on the franchise’s signature risk/reward gameplay with new systems like the Neutrino & Shield mechanic, dynamic bomb variations, and a modernized roll system that maintains arcade authenticity while optimizing for modern controllers.
