A new voice in the indie games scene has emerged from Germany. Phantom Island, a newly formed independent studio led by veteran developer Thomas Krüger, has officially launched its debut title Pencil Stories, a serene, hand-drawn puzzle adventure now available on PC via Steam.
Designed as a gentle, reflective experience rather than a high-stakes challenge, Pencil Stories invites players into a quiet nocturnal world where observation, imagination, and storytelling take center stage.
A Moonlit Journey Through Tsukinoma
Set in the sleepy village of Tsukinoma, Pencil Stories follows Letty, an unusual but charming protagonist — a living letter envelope who works as a midnight mail carrier.
Unlike traditional adventure games filled with danger or urgency, Letty’s role is peaceful yet meaningful: she delivers letters after dark, navigating a silver-lit landscape filled with hidden mailboxes, poetic clues, and quiet stories from the village’s residents.
The game’s core mechanic revolves around visual detective work. Players must carefully interpret hand-drawn sketches and poetic hints to determine where each letter should be delivered. This encourages thoughtful exploration rather than trial-and-error gameplay.
A Unique “Coal-Pencil” Art Style That Redefines Cozy
One of Pencil Stories’ standout features is its coal-pencil aesthetic, where every visual element has been hand-drawn to resemble concept art brought to life.
This deliberate artistic choice gives the game a nostalgic, sketchbook-like atmosphere — one that feels intimate, calming, and deeply personal. Rather than bright pastel “cozy game” visuals, Phantom Island opted for a softer monochrome style that evokes moonlight, stillness, and memory.
According to Lead Developer Thomas Krüger:
“Pencil Stories is our redefinition of cozy — apart from all typical color schemes. In larger productions, I often loved concept art more than the final visuals. Here, we kept that raw, imaginative feeling. It’s like taking a quiet walk through a moonlit park.”
A Stress-Free, Player-First Design Philosophy
Pencil Stories was developed throughout 2024 as a self-funded passion project. The small but dedicated team consisted of:
- Two working students
- Five specialized freelance artists and developers
- Industry veteran Thomas Krüger leading creative direction
This structure allowed Phantom Island to focus on artistic integrity, emotional resonance, and accessibility, rather than commercial pressure or live-service trends.
There are no timers, no fail states, and no stress mechanics — only thoughtful puzzles and reflective moments that encourage players to slow down and absorb the world around them.
