The Posthumous Investigation Launches March 31: A Time-Loop Noir Mystery Where Your Client Is Already Dead

Posthumous Investigation

A new supernatural detective story is about to challenge players’ investigative skills. The upcoming indie mystery The Posthumous Investigation is set to launch on March 31, 2026, on Steam for PC, delivering a noir-inspired thriller built around time loops, deduction, and literary intrigue.

Developed by Mother Gaia Studio and published by CriticalLeap, the game has already gained momentum with more than 20,000 wishlists ahead of release. A version for the Nintendo Switch is also currently in development.

Blending supernatural storytelling with investigative gameplay, The Posthumous Investigation presents a unique twist on the detective genre: the victim is your client—and he’s already dead.

A Noir Mystery Set in 1937 Rio de Janeiro

The story takes place in a stylized version of Rio de Janeiro in 1937, steeped in classic film noir atmosphere.

Players take on the role of a private investigator hired by Brás Cubas, a wealthy man whose ghost is trapped in a strange purgatorial time loop. Unable to move on, Cubas enlists your help to uncover the truth behind his murder.

Every day resets after the same cycle, giving players repeated opportunities to observe suspects, uncover clues, and gradually piece together what really happened.

The catch? The victim himself may not be entirely trustworthy.

Time-Loop Investigation Mechanics

One of the defining features of The Posthumous Investigation is its time-loop structure, which encourages experimentation and deduction.

Players are given a single day to investigate the murder—but they can relive that day as many times as needed.

During each loop, players can:

  • Observe the routines of 14 unique suspects
  • Follow characters through the city to uncover hidden interactions
  • Gather information that unlocks new dialogue paths in future loops
  • Test different investigative strategies to uncover contradictions

With every reset, players gain new insights that bring them closer to solving the crime.

True Deduction Without Hand-Holding

Unlike many modern mystery games, The Posthumous Investigation emphasizes pure deduction.

Instead of guided objectives or obvious solutions, players must analyze evidence using the game’s Thinking Board, a system that allows them to physically connect clues and reconstruct timelines.

By organizing information and identifying contradictions between alibis, players gradually uncover the truth behind the murder.

The design encourages careful observation, logical reasoning, and genuine investigative thinking.

A Story Inspired by Brazilian Literary Heritage

Beyond its detective gameplay, The Posthumous Investigation draws inspiration from the work of Machado de Assis, one of Brazil’s most influential literary figures.

Often called the “Brazilian Shakespeare,” Machado de Assis was known for his satirical storytelling and morally complex characters.

The game channels this spirit through its narrative, presenting a world where every character has secrets and no one is entirely innocent—including the ghost who hired you.

This literary influence adds depth and humor to the mystery, blending classic noir storytelling with social commentary.

A Hand-Drawn Noir Visual Style

Visually, The Posthumous Investigation features a hand-drawn art style that captures the mood of 1930s noir fiction.

The stylized environments of Rio de Janeiro, combined with shadowy lighting and expressive character designs, help create a moody atmosphere that complements the game’s investigative tone.

The result is a world that feels both historically inspired and artistically distinctive.
