Explore the New 3D Overworld

The upcoming playtest introduces Swordeye’s largest map yet, a sprawling open-world zone called the Overworld. This new environment expands the game beyond dungeon-style encounters by adding persistent MMO-style gameplay where players can explore, gather resources, and battle enemies together.

The Overworld encourages cooperation among players as they search for valuable loot and prepare for dynamic world events.

Players can collect:

  • Dual-handed swords with unique combat styles
  • Protective amulets for defensive bonuses
  • Crafting materials used to create potions and upgrade abilities

At the center of the map sits a fortified keep, which acts as a relatively safe starting zone where players spawn and regroup before heading back into battle.

Raid Events and Base Defense Battles

One of the highlights of the Overworld expansion is a new raid-style defense system.

World events will trigger regularly, forcing players to defend the central keep against waves of enemies. These attacks target the stronghold’s gates, towers, and nearby structures, turning the map into a large-scale cooperative battlefield.

Players must coordinate their strategies to survive the assault and protect the keep from destruction.

High-Risk Extraction Gameplay

While the area near the central keep provides basic gear and safer exploration, players who venture farther into the Overworld will encounter higher-risk zones with greater rewards.

These areas are marked by demarcation lines, signaling tougher enemies and better loot opportunities.

However, the stakes are significantly higher:

  • Players killed in dangerous zones will drop their gear
  • They will respawn at their last bind stone
  • Recovering lost equipment becomes a race against other players

This extraction-style progression system adds tension to every encounter, encouraging players to weigh risk versus reward.

Tower Dungeons and Portal Challenges

The Overworld also connects to the game’s dungeon system through mysterious red portals.

Entering these portals transports players to Swordeye’s towering dungeon map, where they must ascend multiple floors filled with enemies, rival players, and increasingly valuable rewards.

Each level presents greater difficulty, pushing players to see how far they can climb before escaping alive.

Proximity Voice Chat and New Mobility Tools

The upcoming playtest also introduces several gameplay improvements designed to enhance cooperation and exploration.

Proximity Voice Chat

Players can now communicate with nearby teammates using proximity-based voice chat, making it easier to coordinate strategies during world events or dungeon runs.

Jump Pads for Faster Movement

New jump pads scattered across the map allow players to traverse the massive Overworld more quickly and reach combat zones faster.

Hidden Secrets and Puzzle Elements

Exploration will also reward curious players with:

  • Locked doors
  • Hidden keys
  • Secret treasure chests

These elements add an additional layer of discovery beyond combat.

Up to 30 Players per Server

The new Overworld experience supports up to 30 players per server, delivering a blend of multiplayer chaos and cooperative exploration.

Key features of the playtest include:

  • A massive 3D open-world map with raid events
  • MMO-lite gameplay with 30-player servers
  • Extraction mechanics with risk-based loot zones
  • Tower dungeon exploration through portals
  • Beginner-friendly mechanics that protect early loot
  • Nearly 20 hours of playable content in the largest test so far

Swordeye Playtest Start Time

The next playtest for Swordeye officially begins on March 26, 2026, at 1 PM PST.

All players in the queue when the playtest begins will receive guaranteed access, giving everyone an opportunity to experience the new Overworld systems.

A Unique Directional Swordfighting MMO

Swordeye stands out for its directional melee combat system, where precise sword swings and positioning determine the outcome of battles.

Combined with its dark fantasy setting, extraction mechanics, and MMO-style open world, the game aims to deliver a tense multiplayer experience where every fight and decision matters.

As development continues, the upcoming playtest represents a major milestone for the project and offers players their first real look at the game’s evolving open-world design.
