Explore the Alien Planet of Syro

In CALX, players embark on a solitary adventure across the mysterious planet Syro, a world once home to an ancient civilization now long vanished.

As the protagonist journeys across the planet, they must confront a spreading corruption known as the WARP, a mysterious force slowly reshaping the world and threatening its fragile ecosystems.

Throughout the game, players will uncover fragments of Syro’s forgotten past while navigating:

  • Vast alien landscapes
  • Towering crystal formations
  • Abandoned ruins of a lost civilization

The narrative unfolds gradually through environmental storytelling, allowing players to piece together the history of the planet as they explore.

Movement-Driven Gameplay and Fluid Combat

Movement plays a central role in the gameplay design of CALX.

Players will continuously upgrade their traversal abilities throughout the journey, unlocking new ways to navigate Syro’s dynamic environments and approach combat encounters.

Key gameplay elements include:

  • Expanding movement abilities that improve exploration and combat
  • Action-driven battles against hostile forces corrupted by the WARP
  • Hidden paths and secret areas scattered across Syro’s landscapes

As players grow stronger, they’ll gain access to new techniques that make movement faster, smoother, and more versatile.

A Sci-Fi World Inspired by Moebius

One of the most striking aspects of CALX is its visual identity.

The game’s art direction draws heavily from the distinctive style of Jean Giraud (Moebius), known for his vibrant sci-fi illustrations and expansive alien worlds.

This inspiration can be seen in:

  • Surreal environmental designs
  • Bold color palettes
  • Expansive landscapes that evoke isolation and wonder

The result is a visually unique sci-fi adventure where art, gameplay, and storytelling merge to create a deeply immersive world.

Dynamic IDM Soundtrack Enhances Exploration

Music also plays a crucial role in shaping the atmosphere of CALX.

The soundtrack is composed by Matteo Ferrante and features an IDM-inspired soundscape influenced by electronic music pioneer Aphex Twin.

The audio design adapts dynamically to the player’s actions and the environment, shifting between reflective tones during exploration and more intense rhythms during combat sequences.

Each biome on Syro features its own musical identity, further reinforcing the feeling of traveling through a living alien world.

A Journey Inspired by Classic Exploration Games

According to Game and Narrative Designer Gabriele Ferreccio, the team aimed to recreate the sense of solitude and discovery found in genre-defining titles.

The developers cite inspiration from games such as:

  • Metroid
  • Hyper Light Drifter

Their goal was to ensure every element—gameplay, art direction, and music—works together to create a cohesive and emotional experience.
