Hungry Horrors Dishes Out Folklore-Filled Strategy as Steam Early Access Launch Nears

Hungry Horrors

Clumsy Bear Studio is set to bring its uniquely delicious and delightfully unsettling card-based adventure Hungry Horrors to Steam Early Access on January 19, 2026, inviting players to serve meals instead of swinging swords in a world steeped in British and Irish folklore.

Blending turn-based strategy, cozy pixel art, and dark mythological horror, Hungry Horrors replaces combat with cooking, where every card is a traditional dish and every move is a desperate attempt to keep legendary creatures fed before they feast on you instead.

Following a warmly received demo and months of community-driven iteration, the Early Access launch marks a major milestone for the game, expanding its systems, content, and progression while keeping player feedback at the heart of development.

A Culinary Twist on Folkloric Horror

Unlike most fantasy games, Hungry Horrors does not ask players to slay monsters. Instead, survival depends on understanding their tastes, managing their hunger, and carefully plating regional recipes that satisfy their cravings.

Each encounter becomes a delicate balancing act of flavor, timing, and strategy, as players juggle taste chains, seasonings, and cookware while navigating a cursed kingdom filled with mythic dangers.

The game’s narrative follows a spoiled princess forced into action when a ravenous curse spreads across her realm and awakens a slumbering dragon. Guided by a sharp-tongued, sarcastic cat, she must master the art of cooking to pacify the Horrors that haunt the land.

What Hungry Horrors Early Access Includes

When Hungry Horrors launches on Steam Early Access on January 19, players will experience a rich foundation of content, including:

  • Five playable biomes: Caves, Woods, Bogs, Meadows, and the Town, along with the Dungeon and Kitchen
  • 20 folklore Horrors inspired by British and Irish myth, such as Dullahan, Jenny Greenteeth, and Queen Mab
  • 42 playable dishes based on real traditional recipes from Britain and Ireland
  • Eight legendary characters, including Herne the Hunter and the Wulver
  • Seasonings, cookware, potions, and artefacts that meaningfully change each run
  • Core progression through the Book of Taliesin, unlocking mechanics and strengthening future playthroughs
  • Unique fatality animations for every Horror
  • Five original music tracks composed by Henry Taylor
  • Hidden easter eggs, unlockable mechanics, and Steam achievements
  • Full controller support, plus mouse-only and keyboard-only play modes

The studio has confirmed that regular updates will roll out throughout Early Access, introducing new areas, creatures, dishes, and narrative elements based on player feedback.

Available Platforms and Future Plans

Hungry Horrors will be available on PC via Steam, with support for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck starting January 19, 2026.

Clumsy Bear Studio has indicated that additional platforms may be considered after the PC release, depending on player reception and development progress.

Folklore Meets Food in Every Encounter

Every Horror, character, and artefact in Hungry Horrors is rooted in regional folklore, ranging from well-known legends to obscure local myths that rarely appear in games.

Similarly, every dish is based on an authentic British or Irish recipe, many of which are still served in pubs today—giving the game a rare blend of cultural authenticity and playful fantasy.

Visually, Hungry Horrors embraces vibrant 90s-inspired pixel art, while its whimsical soundtrack adds charm to its darker, more eerie themes.

The result is a game that feels cozy yet dangerous, strategic yet whimsical, and deeply grounded in real-world traditions.

Why Hungry Horrors Stands Out in Early Access

At a time when many indie card games lean heavily into combat, Hungry Horrors distinguishes itself by making cooking the core mechanic, offering a fresh twist on deck-building and turn-based strategy.

Its combination of folklore, food, and fate creates an experience that is both intellectually engaging and emotionally immersive—perfect for fans of narrative-driven strategy games with a creative edge.
