The Global Esports Federation (GEF) has officially announced that Los Angeles will host the Global Esports World Finals 2026, cementing the city’s status as a global hub for gaming, sports, and entertainment. The Opening Ceremony of the Los Angeles 2026 Global Esports World Finals (#GEG26) is scheduled for Friday, December 4, 2026.
This landmark decision comes as part of a strategic partnership between the Los Angeles Times Media Group and the GEF, which also includes the development of a state-of-the-art esports stadium at the Los Angeles Times’ El Segundo campus.
Los Angeles Beats Global Competition
Following a competitive bidding process involving cities around the world, the GEF Board selected Los Angeles as the official host city. The announcement was formalized at the Los Angeles Times headquarters in the presence of Mayor Karen Bass and El Segundo Mayor Chris Pimentel, further highlighting the city’s commitment to esports.
Paul J. Foster, President and CEO of the GEF, emphasized Los Angeles’ cultural significance:
“For many people around the world, Los Angeles symbolizes the epicenter of sport, entertainment, music, and culture – a world of limitless possibilities. As the United States prepares to celebrate 250 years since its founding, our global community from 180 Member Federations is excited to share in this historic moment at the Los Angeles 2026 Global Esports World Finals Games.”
Esports Momentum Builds Ahead of 2028 Olympics
Los Angeles will host the Olympics and Paralympics in 2028, and the Global Esports World Finals is seen as a fitting precursor to the city’s role on the international sporting stage.
Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, Executive Chairman and CEO of the Los Angeles Times Media Group, noted:
“With less than three years until the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Los Angeles is alive with anticipation. Esports adds to that momentum, uniting gaming, sport, and a new wave of entertainment. The Los Angeles Times Media Group is proud to help anchor this milestone event for our city and the world.”
A New Home for Esports in El Segundo
As part of the collaboration, the Los Angeles Times Media Group and the GEF announced plans for a new esports stadium in El Segundo, designed to be a world-class venue for tournaments, community events, and live entertainment. The facility is expected to serve as a long-term hub for both professional and grassroots esports in Southern California.
