Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL) tournament series reached a monumental milestone in esports, becoming the first-ever esports event series to reach 1 billion hours watched. The first MPLs were established in 2018 namely MPL Philippines, MPL Indonesia, MPL Myanmar, and MPL Malaysia/Singapore. In 2021, MPL Malaysia/Singapore officially became two separate leagues namely MPL Malaysia and MPL Singapore. In the same year, MPL Brazil and MPL Cambodia had their maiden seasons. MPL MENA launched in 2022, followed by MPL LATAM in 2024.
The league has been seeing a growth in yearly viewership: seeing a jump from a 3 million viewership during the M2 World Championship back in 2020 to a 5 million peak viewership by the M5 World Championship last year.
Apart from MLBB’s esports tournament, League of Legends’ World Championship is also close to reaching a billion hours watched as well. In the top five, another League of Legends tournament, League of Legends Champions Korea is in the top five of peak viewership with 960,000 million hours.
Rounding up the top five esports series by watch time are the Valorant Champions Tour and The International, at 860 million hours and 630 millions respectively.
