The next major competitive Pokémon game is almost here. The Pokémon Company International has officially confirmed that Pokémon Champions will launch on April 8, 2026 for the Nintendo Switch, with a mobile version planned to arrive later this year.
The announcement also revealed new details about returning Pokémon, competitive events, and special enhancements for next-generation hardware.
Pokémon Champions Release Date and Platforms
Pokémon Champions is designed to bring the core Pokémon battling experience to a wider audience than ever before. The game launches first on the Nintendo Switch on April 8, while a mobile version for smartphones will follow later in 2026.
The game focuses heavily on competitive battles, allowing players to build teams based on different Pokémon types, Abilities, and move combinations—making it a major new entry for competitive players worldwide.
Nintendo Switch 2 Enhancements Confirmed
Players using the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2 will also benefit from improved visual performance through a free update available at launch. The update will enhance overall graphics and performance, giving players a smoother competitive experience on the new hardware.
The update will be available as a free download starting April 8, meaning players can upgrade immediately when the game launches.
Pokémon Champions Becomes the New Competitive Platform
One of the biggest announcements is that Pokémon Champions will become the primary platform for official Video Game Championships events starting this year.
The game will make its competitive debut at the Indianapolis Regional Championships (May 29–31, 2026) before appearing at several major international events, including:
- The Turin Special Championships (June 6–7, 2026)
- The North America International Championships (June 12–14, 2026)
- The Pokémon World Championships (August 28–30, 2026)
This confirms that Pokémon Champions will play a major role in the competitive scene moving forward.
Returning Mega-Evolved Pokémon Revealed
The announcement also confirmed the return of several Mega-Evolved Pokémon, including:
- Mega Meganium
- Mega Emboar
- Mega Feraligatr
These Pokémon first appeared in Pokémon Legends: Z-A and now return with new abilities designed specifically for competitive play.
For example, Mega Meganium introduces the new Ability Mega Sol, which allows its moves to behave as if harsh sunlight is active, while Mega Feraligatr’s Dragonize ability converts Normal-type moves into Dragon-type attacks and boosts their power.
Starter Pack Bundle Also Available at Launch
Players can also purchase the Pokémon Champions + Starter Pack on April 8. This bundle includes the base game plus additional in-game bonuses designed to help players progress faster in the early stages of the game.
Combined with the game’s Pokémon HOME connectivity, this makes it easier for long-time fans to bring their favorite Pokémon into competitive battles right away.
