Fans of classic SNES-era RPGs have something new to celebrate. Shrine’s Legacy, a 16-bit fantasy action RPG developed by Positive Concept Games and published by Indie.io, officially launched on PC via Steam and Steam Deck for $19.99 USD.
Blending nostalgic pixel art with modern gameplay design, Shrine’s Legacy tells an emotional tale of friendship, sacrifice, and the fight to save a world consumed by darkness.
A Battle Against the Dark Lord
After centuries of imprisonment, the malevolent Dark Lord Aklor has returned, spreading chaos across the land of Ardemia. The only hope lies with Rio, heir to the legendary Sword of the Shrine, and his companion Reima, a powerful mage. Together, they must gather the eight elemental forces hidden throughout the realm to awaken the only power capable of defeating Aklor once and for all.
Players will journey through vast lands filled with mysteries, perilous dungeons, grieving towns, and unforgettable allies. Every choice carries weight, and the scars of war run deep across Ardemia’s people.
Classic RPG Inspiration with a Modern Twist
Inspired by iconic JRPGs, Shrine’s Legacy combines heartfelt storytelling with real-time combat. Players can switch seamlessly between Rio’s sword techniques and Reima’s magical arsenal, or team up in local and online co-op, a feature designed to capture the spirit of games like Secret of Mana.
Key gameplay features include:
- Real-Time Action Combat: Combine sword strikes and spells for fast-paced, tactical battles.
- Single Player or Co-Op: Experience the adventure solo or join a friend locally or online.
- Puzzles & Exploration: Solve intricate challenges while uncovering hidden treasures and lore.
- Progression System: Unlock new abilities and spells to strengthen Rio and Reima as their quest unfolds.
- An Emotional Journey: Experience a narrative filled with sacrifice, bonds, and the high stakes of saving a world on the brink of ruin.
Alan Gabbard, Creative Director at Positive Concept Games, emphasized the importance of co-op in the design: “As two friends who love RPGs, we felt there weren’t enough co-op experiences in the genre. That’s why we wanted to capture what Mana games achieved—sharing the adventure with someone you care about.”
Shrine’s Legacy is available now on PC and Steam Deck for $19.99 USD with English language support.
