Berlin-based indie studio Indifferent Penguin is gearing up to drop one of the most unhinged action titles of the year. Tackle for Loss, a top-down, ultra-violent action game that fuses American football tactics with Hotline Miami–style intensity, will launch on PC on February 5, 2026 — just days before the real-world Super Bowl.
Equal parts tactical puzzle and breakneck brawl, the game puts players in the cleats of a broken former pro athlete who must smash his way through a criminal underworld to rescue his kidnapped daughter. Brutal, stylish, and relentlessly tense, Tackle for Loss is shaping up to be a standout in the indie action scene.
A Violent Twist on American Football
Rather than stadiums and touchdowns, Tackle for Loss transplants football mechanics into grim multi-story buildings filled with armed criminals.
Combat is built around a clever adaptation of football’s four-down rule: on each floor, players are limited to four offensive actions. Once those moves are spent, you’re done — forcing careful planning, razor-sharp timing, and absolute commitment.
Success depends on:
- Reading room layouts before you act
- Plotting efficient routes through enemies
- Moving fast and decisively
- Never hesitating once the play begins
It’s football logic, but filtered through a neon-soaked, blood-spattered lens.
One Hit and You’re Out
Tackle for Loss is punishing by design. Every character — including the player — dies in a single hit.
Each floor becomes a high-stakes speed puzzle where a single mistake means instant failure. Thankfully, rapid restarts keep the pace lightning-fast, encouraging players to refine strategies, memorize patterns, and chase that perfect run.
The result is a loop that feels addictive rather than frustrating — fail fast, learn faster, and strike harder.
Inspired by Hotline Miami and Taken
Narratively, the game channels the gritty revenge energy of films like Taken, while mechanically drawing inspiration from Hotline Miami’s frenetic top-down combat.
You play a concussed, battered ex-football star pushed beyond his limits — a man running on rage, instinct, and muscle memory as much as strategy.
Developer Daniel Wichterich explains:
“I created Tackle for Loss because I love fast, aggressive action games that feel incredible in the hands. I wanted to capture the raw energy and violence of American football, but from a completely different angle.”
