11 bit studios, the creators behind the critically acclaimed This War of Mine, are set to release their latest sci-fi personal survival game, The Alters, in 2025. While the two games may seem worlds apart, they share a common theme: survival.
In This War of Mine, players navigate the harrowing experience of surviving in a besieged city, doing whatever it takes to outlast the war. The Alters, on the other hand, presents a race against time, where players must keep their mobile base moving to avoid being consumed by a scorching sun.
Both games push players out of their comfort zones, whether it’s a bombed-out shelter or an expandable circular base. Venturing into hostile environments is a necessity, as resources are scarce. The circular base in The Alters can be expanded to meet the needs of the crew, observed from a similar perspective as the shelter in This War of Mine.
The Alters introduces a unique twist: players “build” their crew by revisiting their past and altering the choices they made. Using a Quantum Computer, players create alternate versions of themselves—Jans who share their face, memories, and even regrets. Each Alter has different skills crucial to operating the base, but some may struggle with their identity, knowing they are not the original Jan Dolski.
The game presents deeply personal choices, some difficult and irreversible, that shape the outcome of survival. Developed by 11 bit studios, The Alters will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and will also be included in Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.
