After more than four decades, a cult classic returns to the spotlight. ChipWits, the beloved 1984 educational programming game that helped early Mac users discover the joy of coding, is making a grand comeback. A free playable demo launches May 28, 2025, on Steam, promising nostalgic fun for retro gamers and a gentle entry point into programming for a whole new generation.
With a fully modernized reboot led by original co-creator Doug Sharp and software engineer Mark Roth, ChipWits is more than a nostalgia play—it’s an ambitious attempt to reignite the spark that once made it a staple in classrooms and computer clubs across the country.
From 1984 to 2025: A Programming Classic Reimagined
Originally released for the Macintosh in 1984, ChipWits introduced players to programming using a visual, chip-based logic system. Players built sequences of “action chips” to control their robot through puzzle-based levels. The original game was widely praised by magazines like BYTE, MacUser, and COMPUTE!, and earned a place in the hearts of budding coders during the early days of home computing.
Now, in 2025, ChipWits is getting a complete overhaul—new graphics, music, missions, mechanics, and even online leaderboards—while still retaining the core philosophy that made it iconic: making programming accessible, creative, and fun.
“I’m proud that ChipWits inspired young coders in the ‘80s,” said co-creator Doug Sharp, “and even prouder that it will inspire a new wave—young and not-so-young—40 years later.”
A Personal Journey Comes Full Circle
One of those inspired by the original game is Mark Roth, now lead developer of the reboot. First introduced to ChipWits in fifth grade, he credits it with launching his career in software engineering.
“I owe a lot to that game,” said Roth. “It planted the seed that led me to programming. This reboot is our chance to give that same spark to today’s players.”
Their team began the reboot in 2023, with a shared vision: to honor the original’s educational value while making it competitive, community-driven, and modern.
