The Gaming Districts Q&A with Capcom and TiMi Studio Group
What was the vision behind creating Monster Hunter Outlanders, and what kind of experience did you want to deliver to mobile players?
Ichiro Kiyokawa, Producer, Capcom: Capcom’s Monster Hunter development has traditionally focused mainly on PC and console games. Monster Hunter Outlanders is different because we asked TiMi Studio Group to develop this title specifically as a mobile game. We wanted Monster Hunter Outlanders to deliver a high-quality action experience on mobile. That is one of the special features of the Monster Hunter series, so it was important for us to maintain that quality while creating something designed specifically for mobile players.By working with TiMi Studio Group, we wanted Monster Hunter Outlanders to have a unique position within the Monster Hunter franchise while still delivering the action experience that players expect from the series.
What was the most important element of Monster Hunter that you wanted to preserve in the mobile version?
Kiyokawa: As a Monster Hunter IP, there are several important elements that we wanted to preserve. One of the most important is the way players make different judgments during battles against monsters. Players need to observe the behavior of monsters and decide whether they should dodge or attack. By observing monsters and making different judgments depending on their behavior, players can choose different actions and also make use of different weapons. That decision-making during combat is a very important part of the Monster Hunter identity, and we wanted to preserve it in Monster Hunter Outlanders. At the same time, because this is a new game, we also wanted to introduce brand-new functions and elements that would differentiate Monster Hunter Outlanders from previous games in the franchise.
What were the biggest challenges in bringing a large-scale game like Monster Hunter Outlanders to mobile?
Dong Huang, Producer, TiMi Studio Group: When we wanted to bring the action experience of Monster Hunter Outlanders to mobile, we faced two major challenges. The first was how to simplify the battle system on mobile so that more people, including players who had never played Monster Hunter before, could experience the fun of the game. The second challenge involved performance and compatibility on mobile devices. Optimizing the game’s performance and ensuring compatibility across smartphones was also a major issue for us. I’m very happy to say that we have found a good balance between these two aspects. Through our past tests, we have reached a good level in terms of the interaction experience, performance optimization, and compatibility.
For players experiencing Monster Hunter for the very first time on mobile, what do you think will be the biggest surprise or standout?
Huang: For players experiencing Monster Hunter for the first time through Monster Hunter Outlanders, I think one of the biggest surprises will be realizing, “I can also play Monster Hunter.” They may not consider themselves very good at action games, but Outlanders gives them an opportunity to get accustomed to the gameplay and experience the series. Another thing I hope for is that after playing Monster Hunter Outlanders, they will discover that Monster Hunter is really fun and become interested in learning more about the IP and its other games.
Kiyokawa: Capcom knows that there are some players who feel that previous Monster Hunter titles can be difficult to play. For those players, Monster Hunter Outlanders could be a good starting point. We have prepared a new playing mode called Starting Mode, where the controls are simplified. Players can control the game in a way that is easier for newcomers to understand and use. We know that some users feel there is a high hurdle when it comes to action games, but that hurdle has been significantly reduced in Outlanders. Even for me, that was a big surprise. I hope newcomers can actively join the game and enjoy playing it.
How does Monster Hunter Outlanders complement the broader Monster Hunter ecosystem while offering its own unique identity?
Kiyokawa: Monster Hunter Outlanders is a title developed specifically for mobile. Capcom’s other Monster Hunter titles have primarily been developed as hunting-action games for PC and home consoles. Those games offer their own experiences, but some people may find them difficult. In contrast, the position of Monster Hunter Outlanders is that it is a mobile game that is relatively easy to play. Players can start the game more easily, even if they don’t have a PC or a game console. I think this is a very important position within the Monster Hunter franchise. Some players may feel that the difficult hunting-action gameplay of previous titles is too challenging to tackle. Monster Hunter Outlanders lowers that starting hurdle. Because it is a mobile game, players don’t need a dedicated computer or console to begin playing. That accessibility is a very important differentiating factor for Outlanders within the broader Monster Hunter ecosystem.
What can players expect from the game’s controls?
Kiyokawa: Monster Hunter Outlanders features two control modes designed to accommodate different types of players. The Classic control mode provides an option for players who want a more traditional approach, while Adventure is designed to help newcomers get up to speed more quickly. The development team has also confirmed support for controllers and joysticks, allowing players to use external controls while battling with their hunters and adventurers.
After the playtest and Monster Hunter Outlanders’ participation in Tokyo Game Show, what is the one thing you hope players and fans will be most excited about ahead of launch?
Kiyokawa: We first announced the game at Gamescom, and this time at Tokyo Game Show, we prepared a playable build. Players can battle a new Elder Dragon called Ruger Aidal, which is an original monster created for Monster Hunter Outlanders.
We have added new elements and original monsters to Outlanders, and we are very confident about delivering these new experiences to even more users.
After the official release, we hope players will look forward to battling different monsters, including the brand-new original monster Ruger Aidal, and enjoy the new challenges.
What else can players look forward to in Monster Hunter Outlanders?
Huang: In addition to what Mr. Kiyokawa mentioned, I would like to add that there will be a completely brand-new story and brand-new adventurers appearing in Monster Hunter Outlanders. We will also support controllers and joysticks. During battles, players will be able to use controllers and joysticks to control their adventurers and hunters. We hope players will look forward to these elements as well.

A New Hunt Begins on Mobile
Monster Hunter Outlanders represents a new chapter for the franchise, taking its hunting-action formula to mobile while introducing its own characters, story, monsters, and exploration systems.
For Capcom and TiMi Studio Group, the challenge has been finding the balance between accessibility and the combat decision-making that remains central to Monster Hunter.
For players, that balance will soon be put to the test when the game launches worldwide on October 29, 2026, outside mainland China.
With pre-registration already open, the hunt is almost ready to begin.
