The sands of Arrakis are officially shifting toward your living room. In a massive announcement that has sent shockwaves through both the sci-fi and survival gaming communities, developer and publisher Funcom has revealed that Dune: Awakening is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on September 22, 2026.
But this is not just a simple console port. Funcom is using this launch to introduce a game-changing addition: a complete single-player mode that lets players experience the entire Arrakis survival journey entirely solo.
Whether you are a PC veteran or a console player waiting for your chance to step onto the desert planet, September is shaping up to be the definitive moment for this open-world epic.
The Ultimate Version of Arrakis: What to Expect on Console
Funcom has spent the last year heavily refining Dune: Awakening on PC through consistent updates and community feedback. Console players are reaping all the rewards. The upcoming September launch packages a year’s worth of optimizations, overhauls, and new features into a single, definitive edition.
According to Funcom CEO Rui Casais, this console launch represents the vision they have always had for the title:
“This release is so much more than just bringing the game to consoles. To Funcom, it’s a major milestone, the result of over a year of work that culminates in the release of a new and improved Dune: Awakening. The best version yet of Dune: Awakening, on PC and console.”
Performance is a top priority for next-gen hardware. Funcom has confirmed that both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will target a smooth 60fps in Performance Mode. Furthermore, the user interfaces, menus, and control schemes have been completely rebuilt and optimized from the ground up for a seamless controller experience.
Brave the Desert Alone: Full Single-Player Mode and Story Finale
The absolute biggest surprise from Funcom is the introduction of a robust single-player mode. While the game originally built its identity as a massive multiplayer survival experience, players can now choose to shut out the rest of the galaxy and brave Arrakis completely on their own terms.
Scalable Difficulty and Custom Rules
In single-player mode and on private servers, you hold all the power. Funcom is introducing an extensive suite of gameplay customization settings, allowing you to fine-tune:
- Resource harvesting rates
- Experience points (XP) gain
- Combat difficulty and survival parameters
The Grand Finale of Book One
If you are playing for the narrative, the September update marks the arrival of the cinematic conclusion to Book One of the storyline. Players can now experience the complete, dramatic narrative arc from start to finish.
Creative Director Joel Bylos noted that fans of Denis Villeneuve’s blockbuster film franchise and Frank Herbert’s classic books have plenty to look forward to:
“For those who want to take a deeper dive on Arrakis, Dune: Awakening offers the ultimate opportunity to step into the books and movies and experience one of science fiction’s most iconic worlds up close. For fans of the movies, we also have tie-in content lined up this year.”
A Rebuilt Multiplayer Loop: No More Lost Progress
For players who still want to brave the shared-world multiplayer servers, the launch brings a massive wave of quality-of-life upgrades designed to eliminate traditional survival game frustrations.
- Optional PvP: If you want to explore the vast Deep Desert or engage in faction conflicts without worrying about hostile players, you can now enjoy the entire multiplayer game in full PvE mode.
- Zero Progress Loss: Say goodbye to the anxiety of taking a break from survival games. Thanks to the new vehicle backup tool and base reconstruction tool, multiplayer players can take extended real-world breaks without losing their hard-earned bases or vehicles.
- Overhauled Endgame: The late-game loop has been completely redesigned from scratch to provide a much more balanced, immersive, and content-rich experience.
- Self-Hosted Servers: On PC, players can now host their own private servers directly from their machines for free, removing the need to rent third-party servers.
Xbox Game Pass, Pre-Orders, and Beyond
Funcom is ensuring that Dune: Awakening is accessible to as many players as possible right at launch. In a major win for Xbox players, the game will be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one (September 22).
The title will fully support Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing cross-play and cross-progression between Xbox consoles and the Microsoft Store on PC. Portable gamers can also rejoice: the game is Steam Deck Verified, supports the ROG Ally, and will be available via GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Pre-Order Tiers and Pricing
Pre-orders are officially live right now on both the PlayStation Store and Xbox Marketplace. Players can choose between three distinct tiers:
- Standard Edition: $49.99
- Deluxe Edition: $69.99 (Includes special rewards and a head start)
- Ultimate Edition: $89.99 (Includes premium rewards and a head start)
An Icy Future: The Polar Cap Map
The updates will not stop in September. Funcom revealed a glimpse of the future with a teaser for The Polar Cap, a massive, free post-launch survival map coming later this year. Located at the icy pole of Arrakis, this brand-new biome will introduce entirely unique survival mechanics, fresh hazards, and frozen landscapes to explore.
