Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients Launches May 29 With Massive Endgame Overhaul

Path of Exile 2

The world of Wraeclast is about to change forever. Path of Exile 2 is preparing for its most ambitious update yet with Return of the Ancients, a colossal expansion arriving on May 29, 2026 PDT across PC, Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and the Epic Games Store.

Developed by Grinding Gear Games, the expansion introduces a fully transformed endgame experience packed with six new storylines, 15 deadly bosses, expanded crafting mechanics, revamped league systems, and two powerful new Ascendancy classes.

For longtime fans and newcomers alike, Return of the Ancients looks poised to redefine what the Path of Exile 2 endgame can be.

Path of Exile 2 Return of the Ancients Expands the Endgame

The centerpiece of the update is a complete redesign of the Atlas and endgame structure. Instead of relying on random progression paths, players will now explore a fully connected Atlas world filled with fixed objectives, discoverable encounters, and dedicated questlines.

At the heart of this new experience lies an ancient fortress awakened by the catastrophic corruption spreading across Wraeclast. Players will descend into sprawling mechanical strongholds, activate precursor technology, uncover hidden lore, and battle devastating new threats while searching for answers tied to the mysterious Third Edict.

The expansion introduces:

  • Over 50 hours of new endgame content
  • Six brand-new storylines
  • 15 new bosses including four Pinnacle encounters
  • Reimagined Atlas progression
  • New challenge systems and crafting mechanics
  • Massive quality-of-life improvements

Unlike previous systems, every major endgame boss is now tied to a dedicated progression questline, allowing players to access encounters naturally without relying on rare key drops.

New Ascendancy Classes Bring Powerful Build Variety

Two major Ascendancy additions headline the expansion: the Spirit Walker and the Martial Artist.

Spirit Walker Turns Beastmasters Into Endgame Powerhouses

The Huntress gains the new Spirit Walker Ascendancy, allowing players to channel Azmerian spirits tied to the Stag, Owl, and Bear.

Each spirit unlocks unique combat enhancements, from spectral stampedes and empowered projectiles to bear companions that fight alongside players. Spirit Walker also introduces advanced beast-taming mechanics, enabling players to recruit powerful enemies as allies.

The class heavily supports minion-focused and hybrid summoner builds while adding fresh customization through the new Idolatry system.

Martial Artist Introduces Illusions and Rune Combat

The Monk’s new Martial Artist Ascendancy focuses on spiritual energy, illusions, resonance attacks, and devastating melee enhancements.

Players can create spectral echoes of their attacks, summon destructive spiritual bells, and eventually transform their gloves into powerful weapons through the Way of the Stonefist.

Combined with the expansion’s new rune systems, the Martial Artist opens up entirely new melee archetypes for Path of Exile 2 players.

Runes of Aldur League Introduces Reality-Bending Crafting

One of the expansion’s biggest gameplay additions is the new Runes of Aldur League, centered around ancient Kalguuran runesmithing.

Players encounter Farrow, a young blacksmith researching the forgotten art of Ezomyte Runesmithing. Through magical Remnants, players can inscribe powerful runes to craft valuable items ranging from currency and socketables to advanced endgame equipment.

However, crafting comes with escalating danger.

Activating a Remnant awakens nearby undead enemies empowered by the exact runes used during crafting. Fire runes create flame-infused enemies, while Moon runes summon deadly celestial hazards across the battlefield.

The more powerful the crafting combination, the more dangerous the encounter becomes.

Verisium and Runic Ward Add New Combat Systems

As players progress deeper into the league mechanics, they uncover the ancient Kalguuran metal known as Verisium.

This introduces Runic Ward, a brand-new defensive layer that functions as both a secondary life pool and an energy source for special runic abilities.

Unlike traditional mana systems, these new skills consume Runic Ward instead, enabling highly flexible hybrid builds.

The update also adds:

  • Over 100 new crafting runes
  • Advanced meta-crafting systems
  • Elemental conversion mechanics
  • Modifier-expanding runes
  • Tier-upgrading Masterwork Runes

The result is one of the deepest crafting expansions ever added to Path of Exile 2.

Atlas Tree and Masters of the Atlas Fully Reworked

The Atlas passive tree has been completely redesigned to encourage meaningful player choice without constant respeccing.

Players can now unlock every node naturally through progression, while new branching decisions allow greater control over preferred endgame activities.

Meanwhile, the new Masters of the Atlas system introduces endgame progression similar to Ascendancy classes.

Players can align with masters like Jado of the Order of the Djinn or monster hunter Hilda, gaining unique bonuses that can be swapped between maps. These systems dramatically expand build diversity and endgame specialization.

Delirium, Breach, Ritual, and Expedition Receive Major Upgrades

All four Early Access league systems have received significant narrative and gameplay overhauls.

Delirium: The Hare and the Raven

Delirium now features visible fog-depth mechanics, mirror shard encounters, and new Distilled Emotions crafting systems. Players eventually confront Tangmazu, the Raven Trickster, in a fully realized storyline.

Breach Gets Enraged Encounters

Breach now includes visible timers and escalating enraged phases if players maintain the encounter long enough. The Hiveborn also introduces Wombgifts and expanded jewelry crafting systems.

Ritual Expands Into Multi-Map Encounters

Ritual now connects directly to the Wildwood and the mysterious King in the Mists. Players must complete evolving ritual chains through multiple maps while confronting the dark entity known as the Bodach.

Expedition Adds Ocean Exploration

Expedition receives one of the largest upgrades, introducing procedural ocean exploration, island encounters, naval expeditions, and hidden bosses tied to Verisium corruption.

Over 30 New Unique Items Added

Return of the Ancients introduces more than 30 new Unique items spanning weapons, armor, and jewelry.

Highlights include:

  • Raven’s Flock – Summons damaging ravens that grow stronger against Unique enemies
  • Liminal Coil – A chaos-focused wand that amplifies damage against cursed enemies while unleashing chain-splitting projectile attacks

These additions aim to support entirely new archetypes while enhancing existing builds.

New Challenge System Rewards Exclusive Armor Set

For the first time in Path of Exile 2, players can complete structured seasonal Challenges.

Completing all eight challenges rewards pieces of the exclusive Knight of Aldur armor set. Progress can also be displayed publicly through chat integration and hideout statues.
